WE ARE IN AN EMERGENCY

Life on our planet is in crisis. The climate is changing rapidly and our future is at stake. Loss of biodiversity. Crop failure. Social and ecological breakdown. Mass extinction. Time is running out and the authorities have failed to deal with the crisis. Extinction Rebellion was founded to do something about this.

WE HAVE A MORAL RIGHT AND DUTY TO ACT

WHO DO WE DO?

WE REBEL

We are in a crisis, but little is happening. Traditional strategies such as petitions, lobbying, protesting and voting in elections have failed due to powerful economic and political opposing forces. Our strategy is rebellion; nonviolent and disruptive civil disobedience, along with events that use strong symbolism to wake people to action.

Extinction Rebellion is a decentralised, international and politically independent movement that was started in the United Kingdom in 2018. Now there are as many as 1010 local groups in 87 countries.

XR is not a traditional environmental organization. We are also a human rights movement – fighting for the right to a livable future. Not only for us, but also for those who live in the Global South, for those who have not yet been born, and for all life in nature.

We are also a movement for democracy. We want to strengthen our democracy, and believe that deliberative democracy and citizens’ assemblies are the very solution to achieve just and effective politics in the face of the climate and nature crisis.

We recognize that non-violence and civil disobedience have been important throughout history in the struggle for civil rights and freedom. We believe that power lies with the people, and that together we can push the authorities into action – to protect nature, our livelihoods and our future here on earth.

WHAT DO WE WANT?

OUR DEMANDS

1

ECOLOGY BEFORE ECONOMY

Eternal economic growth is madness. The government must tell the truth that our economic growth, high CO2 emissions, and increasing consumption are destroying our livelihoods, and rapid and fundamental societal changes are necessary. Nature and life on Earth are prerequisites for our economy and democracy.

2

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING NOW

We are already in the midst of a climate and nature crisis and radical action must be taken immediately. The longer we wait, the worse the consequences will be. The authorities must begin taking all necessary measures such as:

STOP DEVELOPING, START DECOMMISSIONING: The government must follow the scientific consensus and cease planned oil projects, cut all fossil fuel subsidies, investments and production licences, and implement a credible and fair transition plan for the oil industry.

LET NATURE LIVE: We must treat nature with respect and gratitude. Nature is more than its resources, it is our foundation of life and has value in and of itself. We demand that the authorities prioritise our planetary boundaries over economic growth, using this as a guiding principle in the organisation of society.

CLIMATE JUSTICE NOW: Norway has a particularly large historical responsibility for the climate and nature crisis due to our high consumption and export of oil and gas. We demand that the authorities listen to the world’s most climate-vulnerable and meet Debt for Climate’s demand that countries such as Norway pay back their climate debt.

3

STRENGTHEN DEMOCRACY

Our political system has failed in the face of the climate and nature crisis. We require politics that look beyond the next election, are independent of moneyed interests and respect the most climate-vulnerable people in the world as well as future generations. This crisis calls for comprehensive measures that have solid popular support. We therefore demand that the authorities set up citizens’ assemblies which can propose concrete, long-term measures with which to tackle the climate and nature crisis.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
